KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 — National women’s singles shuttler Sonia Cheah has finally clinched her first international title.

It came at the Belgian International Challenge Badminton Championship in Leuven yesterday.

The 23-year-old, who won a silver in the doubles at the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games, pulled off an upset by defeating eighth seeded Sofie Holmboe Dahl of Denmark in the final; winning 21-11, 16-21, 21-16, according to the tournament’s website.

Cheah’s next tournament is the Polish International Challenge to be held from September 22-25, where she is slated to meet Dorotea Sutara of Croatia in the opening match.

Compatriot Goh Giap Chin lost to the eventual winner, Lucas Corvee of France, in the semifinals of the men’s singles yesterday. — Bernama
