MALACCA, February 1 — Melaka United are ready to mount a serious challenge in their Premier League campaign, which kicks off on February 12, by signing four foreign players.

Melaka United have roped in two players from Montenegro, one from Sweden and another from South Korea to beef up the squad.

Leading the cast is Lija Spasojevic, 28, or better known as “Spaso”, from Montenegro, who has been appointed the captain of Melaka United, former Sweden under-21 international Labinot Harbuzi, 29, Balsa Bozovic, 28, (Montenegro) and Shin Jae Pil, 33, or fondly known as JP from South Korea. Spasojevic and 24 other players in the squad were introduced at a ceremony to reveal Melaka United’s new attire for the new season at a leading hotel by Malacca chief minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron.

Idris, who is also the Melaka United Football Association president, reminded the players and management to give priority to the task of winning and continue the values of integrity in their approach.

“Based on the results of a number of friendly matches, I am confident Melaka United will be able to mount a serious challenge for the title in the Premier League,” he said.

Melaka United received sponsorship from a number of sponsors, namely Edra Global Energy Bhd (Edra) which contributed RM3 million, Hatten Group (RM1 million) and Mamee Double-Decker (M) Sdn Bhd (Mamee) (RM500,000).

Melaka United are scheduled to kick off their campaign against Sime Darby on February 12 at the Selayang Stadium. — Bernama
