SINGAPORE, June 14 — Malaysia have surpassed the number of gold medals achieved during the 27th SEA Games held two years ago in Myanmar.
Malaysia have collected 45 gold medals so far at the 28th SEA Games, which is an extra two gold medals from the previous meet.
After the ninth day, Malaysia remained in fourth place with a total of 147 medals – 45 gold, 43 silver and 59 bronze medals.
In Myanmar, the Malaysian contingent had collected 158 medals – 43 gold, 38 silver and 77 bronze medals.
Sepak takraw became the main focus today when the men’s inter-regu team won the gold medal and end a 10-year wait.
The last time Malaysia won the gold medal in the men’s inter-regu event was at the 2005 SEA Games in the Philippines.
Farhan Adam (skipper), Mohd Hanafiah Dolah, Mohammad Syahir Mohd Rosdi beat Laos 2-0 (21-10, 21-16).
While the squash team as expected made a clean sweep, after winning two more gold medals in men’s and women’s team events.
Malaysia however did not take part in the jumbo doubles, which was introduced for the first time in SEA Games.
Thailand had overtaken the host country with 78 gold, 74 silver and 59 bronze medals while Singapore had 74 gold, 65 silver and 94 bronze medals.
Vietnam ranked third with 65 gold, 42 silver and 55 bronze medals.
Timor Leste won their first silver medal when Rosa Luisa Dos Santos lost to Thailand’s Chanatip Sonkam in women’s taekwondo under 49kg.
Myanmar beat Vietnam 2-1 in the ‘mother of all gold medals’ event, to meet Thailand, who beat Indonesia 5-0, in the football final on Wednesday. — Bernama
