INCHEON, Sept 30 — Malaysian divers created a splash at the Munhak Park Tae-hwan Aquatics Centre today when Ooi Tze Liang partnered Ahmad Amsyar Azman to win a silver medal in the 3m Springboard Synchronised diving, here today.
Tze Liang the Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Ahmad Amsyar amassed 405.81 points behind China’s Cao Yuan/Lin Yue who were in a class of their own with 460.86 points.
According to Ahmad Amsyar, he was doubtful of being paired with Tze Liang for the competition because yesterday afternoon the coach was contemplating to name Chew Yiwei for today’s competition.
“However, I did not give up hope and continued to show my prowess in training and the coach was convinced that I could shoulder the responsibility,” he told reporters after the event, here today.
Ahmad Amsyar said the coach was concerned with his performance in training because he initially lacked confidence.
“However, after speaking to my father (Azman Hassan), I was better prepared as my father gave me a lot of encouragement and confidence,” he added.
The duo were consistent throughout the competition, but a lapse in concentration midway through saw the Malaysian pair drop to fourth place after managing only 67.89 points with three dives remaining.
Tze Liang-Ahmad Amsyar recovered well to set good scores in the next three dives — 79.56, 79.80, 79.56 — to sweep past the pair from the host country who were in the running for a silver medal. — Bernama
