JDT wins Super League, state holiday in Johor

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — Star-studded Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) clinched the coveted Super League title in style by beating Sarawak 1-0 at the State Stadium in Kuching.

Matches played were the final fixtures in the 2014 Super League season which came to a close last night.

JDT who finished with 44 points pocketed RM500,000 while second placed Selangor accumulated 41 points while Pahang with 37 points finished third.  Selangor finished as the runner-up after managing only a 2-2 draw against relegated PKNS FC at the Shah Alam Stadium.

Argentina import Jorge Pereyra Diaz was the toast of JDT after squeezing in the winner in the 66th.

Apart from winning the Super League title, JDT also earned a ticket to play in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC Cup) for the second time after 2009.

Selangor meanwhile, failed to take full advantage of playing at home after managing only a 2-2 draw.

Brazilian import Paulo Rangel gave Selangor a flying start in the 22nd minute but Patrick Ronaldinho Wleh made it 1-1 in the 66th minute but Rangel again restored the lead but South Korean import Kim Dong Chen levelled the tie in the 82nd minute after PKNS were awarded a penalty.

At the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium in Kuala Terengganu, Lions XII from Singapore managed a slim 1-0 victory over T-Team through Muhammad Faris Ramli’s 66th minute goal.

In Ipoh, FA Cup champion Pahang suffered a shocking 0-3 loss to Perak at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh.

Armed Forces and Sime Darby FC shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the Selayang Stadium while Kelantan suffered a 2-3 defeat to arch rival Terengganu at the Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium in Kota Baru.

Meanwhile, T-Team and PKNS FC were relegated to the Premier League next season after finishing as the bottom two teams in the Super League while Police, winner of the Premier League title and runner-up Felda United gain promotion to the Super League. — Bernama
