LOS ANGELES, April 26 — The Nocturnal Animals and Arrival actress is taking the title role in the next film from the director of war drama Darkest Hour.

Hot on the heels of a first trailer for sinister small town thriller Sharp Objects, Amy Adams has joined the cast of another best-selling novel adaptation, The Woman in the Window.

It’s being directed by Joe Wright, a Golden Globe nominee for his adaptation of Ian McEwan’s novel Atonement, which was followed by a number of other book-to-film conversions, including Anna Karenina, Pride & Prejudice and The Soloist.

For The Woman in the Window, Amy Adams will become Anna Fox, a reclusive child psychologist who spends her days ingesting prescription medication, drinking wine, watching old films and spying on her neighbours.

Those conditions mean that when the perfect family moves in to the house opposite hers, she’s in position to see something that she shouldn’t have — something that means “her world begins to crumble and its shocking secrets are laid bare.”

That’s what happens in AJ Finn’s January 2018 book, which has sold over a million copies in the US since its January 2018 release, making it the year’s best-seller to date.

It’s a psychological thriller in the vein of Paula Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train or Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, both of which have already been adapted into feature films — one not particularly engaging, the other an awards season favourite for its writer, lead actress and director.
