BARCELONA, Jan 24 — Spanish authorities yesterday confirmed that Shakira is under investigation in Spain for possible tax evasion during the three years before she officially moved to Barcelona.
And everyone is making the same joke: That her tax receipts don’t lie.
Shakira is suspected of failing to pay income taxes from 2012 to 2014.
She officially switched residences in 2015 from the Bahamas to Barcelona, where she lives with her partner, Barcelona player Gerard Pique, and their two sons.
But tax authorities believe she was already living in Barcelona well before then.
Prosecutor José Miguel Company told Spanish media yesterday that a decision on whether to press charges is expected in mid-June.
Meanwhile, Anna Forastier, a spokeswoman for auditing firm PwC, confirmed Shakira had hired the company during the investigation.
If the probe finds wrongdoing, Shakira will join the list of famous names that have found themselves in a spot of bother with Spanish tax authorities, including footballers Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
