LONDON, June 24 — NBCUniversal-owned cable network Syfy has ordered a pilot based on the novella Nightflyers, penned by Game of Thrones author George RR Martin.

Based on Martin’s 1987 novella and film of the same name, Nightflyers is set in the future on the eve of Earth’s destruction and follows a team of eight scientists as they board a starship dubbed The Nightflyer, and set off on a journey to the edge of our solar system in the hopes of contacting alien life. As the ship nears its destination, a series of terrifying events ensue, causing the crew to question themselves, their mission and the vessel itself.

Jeff Buhler will pen the script and executive produce the Universal Cable Productions project alongside Gene Klein, David Bartis and Doug Liman of Hypnotic; Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta of Gaeta Rosenzweig Films; and Lloyd Ivan Miller and Alice P. Neuhauser of Lloyd Ivan Miller Productions. Robert Jaffe, who penned the 1987 feature film based on Martin’s novel, is set as a producer.

Martin himself is not involved, given his overall deal with HBO, where he’s currently co-writing two of the four potential Game of Thrones follow-ups that are in the works (via The Hollywood Reporter). — AFP-Relaxnews
