LOS ANGELES, Nov 21 — Twenty One Pilots hit the American Music Awards stage today.
In their traditional get up of completely black masks, the duo performed their popular songs Heathens and Stressed Out.
Strobe lights and fog machines ensured the rock environment as the two jammed on the drums and electric guitar. Lead singer Tyler Joseph even made an impressive leap off the piano.
The rockers have seen an impressive rise to fame this year, as they currently have three top-five Hot 100 hits.
The duo took the AMA stage for the first time as performers and nominees at the 2016 awards with nominations for favourite duo or group — pop/rock, favourite artist — alternative rock and artist of the year.
Over Thanksgiving weekend, they are also set to release an exclusive vinyl-only live album that they recorded on their Emotional Roadshow world tour.
Other artists scheduled to perform are Justin Bieber, Niall Horan, Maroon 5 and Kendrick Lamar, James Bay, Fifth Harmony, Lady Gaga, Green Day, John Legend, Bruno Mars, Shawn Mendes, The Weeknd, special duets from The Chainsmokers and Halsey, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, and the American Music Award of Merit honoree and performer Sting.
The nominations for the fan-voted awards show, produced by Dick Clark Productions, were revealed earlier this month.
Drake leads with a record 13 nominations, while Rihanna has seven and Adele and Justin Bieber each have five. Beyonce and The Chainsmokers follow closely behind with four and Bryson Tiller, Twenty One Pilots, Carrie Underwood, Fetty Wap and the Weeknd each have three.
The 2016 American Music Awards show, airing on ABC, is executive produced by Allen Shapiro and Mike Mahan, with Larry Klein, Barry Adelman and Mark Bracco serving as producers. — The Hollywood Reporter/Bloomberg
