NEW YORK, Nov 7 — Three days after the Chicago Cubs broke their 108-year championship drought by claiming the 2016 World Series, longtime fan Bill Murray returned to Studio 8H to celebrate the team’s win on Saturday Night Live.
Appearing on SNL’s Weekend Update desk, hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost introduced Cubs players Anthony Rizzo, David Ross, Dexter Fowler and Murray as the winners of the segment’s first-ever The Voice contest.
The quartet, dressed in matching Cubs sweaters and white pants, said they were there to perform their latest song.
“Guys, can you please put into words what it feels like to be named the first winners of weekend update’s The Voice contest?” Jost asked, to which Fowler replied, “This is the best thing we’ve ever done.”
Jost then asked Murray, “You look familiar, did you used to work here?”
“I did, but that was so many lifetimes ago,” Murray, a SNL alum, said.
“Right now, for me, it’s all about our music.”
The four “band members” then introduced their performance, telling the audience they would be singing an “original composition” entitled Go, Cubs, Go.
Rizzo, Ross, Fowler and Murray broke into song, as back-up singers also crooned along to the famous anthem, “Hey, Chicago, what do you say? The Cubs are world champs today.”
The Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians in Game 7 Wednesday night to win their first World Series title since 1908.
