KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19 — The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) hopes the 2017 Budget will help spur the agency in boosting the digital economy, its Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Yasmin Mahmood said.

She said MDEC’s two initiatives, e-Rezeki and e–Usahawan were more gaining attention from low-income earners, especially housewives, students and youths, in providing them opportunities to increase their income.

Last year, MDEC received an allocation of RM100 million from the government to assist low-income earners, who run businesses, via the online platform.

“This is the area that we have been championing in the last couple of years, that is enhancing the digital economy and giving a good impact to the rakyat,” Yasmin told reporters after launching the two-day BIGIT Technology Malaysia 2016, the anchor event for the Big Data Week Asia 2016, here today.

She said as an agency responsible for overseeing the Malaysia Multimedia Super Corridor implementation, MDEC, which was set up 20 years ago, aims to evolve and transform in order to stay ahead and to fully capitalise on the digital innovation.

“This is what I call the year of 2017 and beyond,” she said.

Asked whether MDEC will be getting a lower allocation due to the depleting government revenue as a result of slumping oil prices, she said MDEC would be more efficient and creative.

“We will have more partnerships with private companies to make a difference together in the digital economy,” she added. — Bernama
