PETALING JAYA, May 21 — We’ve all heard the saying life is a circle. But if you believe otherwise, events that have unfolded in 2018 may just change your mind.
After all, for some, three historical occasions this year would invoke a sense of déjà vu, as similar events also took place back in 1981— 37 years ago.
Let’s start with something a little closer to home.
Two weeks ago, on May 9, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad became the seventh Prime Minister of Malaysia after a stunning victory that ended 61 years of the Barisan Nasional government.
Dr Mahathir was also the country’s fourth Prime Minister, a position he assumed in 1981. He was 56 then. At 92, Dr Mahathir is currently the world’s oldest democratically elected leader.
From one happy occasion to another, the royal wedding of Prince Harry to American actress Meghan Markle — who is now known as the Duchess of Sussex — which took place over the weekend was watched by millions across the globe.
The couple wed in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle with a guest list that included the British royal family, Hollywood celebrities and sports personalities.
In 1981, Prince Harry’s parents Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer tied the knot at St Paul’s cathedral — the wedding was dubbed the wedding of the century and was watched by some 750 million people worldwide.
This weekend, yet another 1981 event that will repeat itself is the Uefa Champions League Final that will see Real Madrid play against Liverpool.
On May 27, 1981, Liverpool played against Real Madrid at the European Cup Final which was held in Paris, France. After a goalless first half, Liverpool won the league when Alan Kennedy scored a goal in the second half with a 1-0 score.
The victory was Liverpool’s third European Cup.
