KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 — The media frenzy outside Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s mansion in Taman Duta subsided as the press were drawn away to a larger police operation in the city centre were investigators seized hundreds of designer bags from condos linked to the former prime minister.
Previously into the hundreds of people, only a handful of reporters and photographers maintained their vigil here along with police investigators who tried to crack open a 20-year-old safe in Najib’s home that could not be unlocked.
About six kilometres away from the Pavilion Residences where last night’s main action took place, most of the lights at Najib's residence were switched off, with little sign of police activity visible.
Of those remaining at Jalan Langgak Duta, Taman Duta as of 3.30am, some sat on mini stools they brought along while others whiled away their time on their mobile devices as the lockdown on Najib’s personal residence stretched past the 29-hour mark.
A total of four police officers remained on guard duty near their makeshift police post as authorities have also cordoned off the roads leading to Najib’s home in the upscale neighbourhood.
Since yesterday morning, a police team havse attempted to break open a 20-year-old safe that is missing its keys at Najib's mansion but failed to do so even with the assistance of several locksmiths. They are expected to resume later in the morning.
The raid is part of a larger investigation into the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.
