KUALA LUMPUR, May 17 — The censorship of ‘live’ election result site live.undi.info on the evening of Polling Day should be explained by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), utility firm Maxis Bhd said today.
Maxis — one of the two companies found to be blocking access to the site — told Malay Mail in a statement that it is subject to local laws that regulate internet service providers (ISPs).
“Maxis would like to inform that any matters relating to the blocking of sites should be referred to the regulator, MCMC.
“As a licensee, Maxis complies with legislation regulating ISPs,” it said.
In a report yesterday, technology advocacy group Sinar Project said the censorship by Maxis and TM was done through a process called domain name server (DNS) hijacking, starting from 9.55pm.
It said there was no other censorship in the period prior to the election.
Several sites such as Bersih.org, political party websites and official elections page were also temporarily inaccessible intermittently on different networks early on May 9, but that was mostly due to heavy traffic or other network related issues.
Malay Mail is now waiting for a response from the MCMC.
