PETALING JAYA, May 16 — The police have confirmed today receiving a report lodged in relation to the disappearance of activist Amri Che Mat and claims made by his wife alleging police involvement.
Federal police corporate communications chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Datuk Asmawati Ahmad said a thorough investigation was being conducted in relation to the claims.
“Therefore, the public is urged not to speculate on the matter that could jeopardise our investigations,” she said in statement.
Amri, 45, who co-founded an NGO called Perlis Hope, has been missing since November 24, 2016.
Amri’s wife, Norhayati Mohd Ariffin, said she lodged a police report and recorded a statement on the matter at the Shah Alam district police headquarters yesterday.
In her statement, she claimed that she had been told by a police informer that her husband was taken by a team from Bukit Aman, which was also responsible for the disappearance of Pastor Raymond Koh.
In her statement, she said a police officer had come to her house in Kangar on the night of May 12 and informed her that he knew who had taken Amri.
The officer, who refused to be named after proving his identify, also named a top police officer in charge of Bukit Aman Special Branch’s Social Extremism Division (E2) as the person who headed the operation.
“When I asked why he was taken, he alleged it was because of ‘Shiah’ and ‘forex’,” she added.
Norhayati said a police team in Perlis had been conducting surveillance and passing on the information to Bukit Aman Special Branch on Amri even before his disappearance, according to the police officer.
She said the officer also told her the team that took Amri kidnapped Koh on February 13 last year for allegedly proselytising Muslims.
“I urge the police to investigate these serious allegations with urgency and to find my husband Amri and also Pastor Raymond Koh and return them to their loved ones immediately,” she said.
