PETALING JAYA, May 16 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim offered some pearls of wisdom to DAP’s Lim Guan Eng tonight, telling the incoming finance minister that the portfolio will attract various supplicants.

Speaking in his first public rally after he was pardoned and freed today, the former finance minister told Lim to expect many such visitors once he is elevated to the post.

“It won’t be easy, Guan Eng, you know? All kinds of things will suddenly appear,” he told a crowd of thousands gathered at Padang Timur here to celebrate his release.

“Bears, elephants, pythons… they will all come!”

He then grabbed his own hand and kissed it loudly to imitate the petitioners he used to receive, and mockingly imitated them by saying: “I fully support you, Datuk Seri!”

Anwar was finance minister from 1991 until his sacking in 1998.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has named Lim as his finance minister, but later said the former Penang chief minister must clear his name of a pending corruption charge before he can assume office.
