GEORGE TOWN, April 24 — Barisan Nasional’s (BN) candidate for Pengkalan Kota, Lim Swee Bok wants an opportunity to thank the community for their support through a difficult period in his life last year.

The Tanjung MCA Youth chief said the community had come out to support him when he lost his entire family to a fire last November.

“The local community had consoled me, helped me and supported me through that difficult time so I want to thank them by serving them,” he told reporters after he was named as a candidate for that seat today.

He said he had found it tough going after losing his wife, two young children and mother in a fire that razed his home in Weld Quay.

“It was because of the people’s support and fellow comrades in BN that had helped me through that time,” he said.

He said MCA and BN are his family now and he had devoted a lot of his time since then to serve the community and the party.

“I just hope the people in Pengkalan Kota will give me a chance to serve them,” he said.

The 37-year-old said he is still young, but that he grew up in Pengkalan Kota so he knows the people there.

“I am well versed with the issues on the ground that I can help to resolve so I hope that the people there will let me serve them,” he said.

Lim will be going up against DAP newcomer, Gooi Zi Sen, and two other candidates: Parti Rakyat Malaysia’s Chew Seng Tung and Malaysian United Party’s Koay Teng Lye for the seat.

DAP defended the seat in 2013 with a 13,600-majority while MCA lost its deposit as it only managed to garner 1,803 votes.
