KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 27 — The allegation that Umno will be banned in the near future following the postponement of the party election is not true and deliberately viralled to confuse the public, said Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.
He said that Umno was still functioning at all levels and discharging its responsibilities as required under its establishment.
“The allegation is deliberately viralled to confuse the public especially Umno members and supporters besides the attempts by certain groups to disparage the party,” he said in a media statement here today.
Tengku Adnan also disclosed that the postponement of the Umno election, that was decided earlier, would be held on April 19, 2019 at the latest.
“This is in line with the approval of the Registry of Societies (ROS). This refers to Section 13 A (4) of the Societies Act 1966. The Registrar of Societies is empowered to extend the date or time of the election of registered societies on condition that a written request is made,” he said.
Tengku Adnan said the postponement was to ensure the smooth running of the party in line with Clause 10.15 of the Umno Constitution with the party election being held smoothly and taking into account the current political situation as well as the situation in the country in general.
In this context, Tengku Adnan advised the public particularly Umno members not to be easily duped by the news being viralled but to make confirmation with the Umno headquarters beforehand. — Bernama
