KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 16 — Ops Selamat 12, launched in conjunction with the Chinese New Year on Feb 9, has to date recorded 9,466 accident cases with 91 fatalities.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement director SAC Sharul Othman Mansor said the number of accidents recorded in the six days showed a decrease by 554 cases from the 10,020 cases recorded in the corresponding period during Ops Selamat 10/2017 which saw 98 fatalities.
According to him, out of the 91 traffic fatalities, 61 victims involved motorcyclists and pillion riders.
“As such, Ops Selamat 12 will focus on motorcyclists, apart from six main offences often committed by road users,” he told a news conference at the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza here last night.
The six offences are driving over the speed limit, driving on emergency lanes, crossing double white lines to overtake, beating traffic lights, using mobile phones while driving and cutting queues.
According to Sharul Othman, so far 89,385 summonses had been issued for various road offences during the period.
“The summonses issued will be charged at maximum rate and there will be no discounts for traffic offences during the Ops Selamat 12,” he said adding that the campaign would end on Feb 21. — Bernama
