IPOH, Feb 13 — An abandoned bag of clothes triggered a momentary bomb scare in the quiet town of Kuala Kangsar, nearly 50km from here today.

The bag had been left unattended nearby a signboard along Jalan Raja Chulan sometime today, causing jitters among members of the public.

Kuala Kangsar police chief Asst Comm Ahmad Termizi Abdul Haq said police were alerted to the incident at around 1.30pm.

“We called the bomb disposal unit from the Perak police contingent to handle the matter. The area surrounding the object was cleared and we also closed off Jalan Raja Chulan,” Termizi said today.

“The bomb squad disposed of the package safely between 3pm to 3.30pm and it was determined that the bag was only filled with clothes.

“There were no materials inside that were related to explosives and we reopened the road at around 4pm,” he said.

Termizi said police were still investigating the incident, particularly why the bag had been left unattended along the road.
