PETALING JAYA, Feb 9 — Scroll past the gamut of teddy bears and heart-shaped flower boxes on online marketplace Carousell, and you will find some locals “auctioning” themselves to secure a date for Valentine’s Day dates next week.

The bid starts as low as RM67 per date, but according to them, romance is not really on the cards for now.

“I’d be happy to indulge you on a special day. No strings attached, of course, but if we hit it off then the second date would be my treat,” said a listing for a Carousell member with the username jhnarieff.

The user who later identified himself as 20-something Johan, has presented a chance for bidders to go to the movies, dinner or stargazing with him.

But according to him, nobody has made a genuine offer so far more than six hours after he shared his personal advertorial.

“Someone made a bid of RM69 to be cute, but no serious bidder yet,” he said.

“I am on Tinder but not a lot of people swipe right on me,” he confessed, relating his experience on the online dating platform.

Johan revealed his starting bid of RM67.91 is based on his birthday and that he remains hopeful of landing a date for next Wednesday.

When asked why not aim a little higher and open with a bid of RM679 instead, he replied: “I don’t want to oversell myself.”

Johan is believed to be the second Malaysian “advertising” himself on Carousell, a forum which is more commonly used to trade new and second-hand goods.

The first was user flystorekl, a gym buff who is up for grabs at an audacious price of RM1,000.

Under his article “Date With Me”, listed this morning, the unidentified seller is looking for a meet-up in Kuala Lumpur.

“I’m shy at first but those who know me, they will say that I’m crazy and talks too much. I like to make people laugh and make them feel comfortable to hang out with me,” he wrote.

Interested? Better be quick, since he is taking no more offers after midnight of February 10, according to his post.
