KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 2 — A welfare centre founder was charged at Ampang Court here today with nine sexual offences including rape of a minor and possession of pornographic material.

Zahari Alwi, 56, claimed trial at three separate courts to two charges of rape, three charges of molest, one charge of outraging modesty and three charges of possession of pornography including a fake penis.

On the first two charges, he allegedly raped an 11-year-old girl at two welfare centres in Keramat between 2016 and August 2017.

He faces Section 376(1) of the Penal Code read with Section 16 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum 20 years jail and whipping on conviction.

On three other charges, he allegedly molested the same victim and another girl aged 10, in the living room of the two centres, between December 2015 and 2016.

The charges framed under Section 354 of the Penal Code carries a maximum 10 years imprisonment or a fine or whipping or any two of the punishment on conviction.

Zahari is also accused of possession of pornographic films at the same premises at 7 pm on Jan 10, 2018, under Section 5(1) of the Film Censorship Act 2002, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both, on conviction.

The man allegedly outraged the modesty of the same 11-year-old girl at the same place at 1 pm in December 2015, as charged under Section 509 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum five years jail or a fine or both, on conviction.

He is also accused on two charges of making and possession of still photos of the same victim in his laptop and possession of a fake penis, at 1 pm in December 2015 and 7 pm on Jan 10, at the same two premises.

The charges framed under Section 292(a) of the Penal Code, carries a maximum three years jail or with fine or both, on conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nadiah Malek Fauzie, Norhashimah Hashim and Raihanah Abdul Razak did not propose bail as the accused is currently serving sentence under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act.

The court set March 21 for remention for all the cases. Counsel Illynadiah Mohd Yusof represented the accused.

On Jan 29 this year, the accused’s wife Khairulbariah Mian, 29, claimed trial at the magistrate’s court here, to abetting her husband in molesting two girls at the same two premises, three years ago. — Bernama
