KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 — Local fashion company Voir Holdings Bhd is the majority owner of the special purpose vehicle (SPV) formed for Penang's controversial RM6.3 billion undersea tunnel project, Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong revealed today.
The MCA deputy president reminded DAP that heads the Penang government that it announced in 2013 that two construction giants from China would be the main stakeholders in the SPV.
“But today, our checks show that the two China construction companies are nowhere to be seen as shareholders of the SPV,” he said in a statement, adding that 39 per cent was also owned nominally by others.
“Did the DAP Penang government lie to the public and did a 'bait and switch'?”
Wee appended two previous public statements by the Penang government containing the pledges.
He then questioned if the discovery meant the contract awarded was now invalid, and pressed his political rival to explain the matter.
Wee said the public were entitled to find out why an infrastructure project of the magnitude featured such prominent involvement from a firm primarily concerned with fashion.
The project for the undersea tunnel and three paired roads is now under active investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
The agency has remanded two company directors for the probe that is says is on the RM305 million bill for the project's feasibility studies that remain incomplete after nearly two years.
It raided nine companies yesterday for the investigations in addition to the seven agencies and firms the day before.
