KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission today raided nine more companies in Penang and Kuala Lumpur as part of ongoing efforts to gather documents relating to the Penang undersea tunnel project.
It is understood that the MACC has already recorded statements from eight individuals, including a company secretary, advisers and consultants, and that more people are expected to be called up for questioning.
“We will call up a few important individuals to get their statements,” MACC deputy commissioner Datuk Seri Azam Baki said in a statement.
Yesterday, the MACC investigation team recorded statements of 12 witnesses from the state finance office, stage economic planning unit, public works department, land and mines department and a managing director of a company.
They also seized documents from the land and mines department.
The controversial 7.2km undersea tunnel, which was awarded to Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd, was proposed to connect Gurney Drive on the island to Bagan Ajam in Butterworth as part of the state’s Penang Transport Master Plan to ease traffic congestion in the state.
The feasibility studies for the tunnel was delayed for almost two years and last October, Consortium Zenith claimed there was no hurry to complete the studies as the project is only expected to start in 2023.
