KUCHING, Jan 5 — The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department is to have its own K9 unit this year.

Its director, Nor Hisham Mohammad, said the unit could begin operations as early as April depending on the tender process and the acquisition of the dogs.

“The plan is to have the K9 unit at the Serian Fire and Rescue Station. Initially, six dogs will be stationed there,” he said to Bernama yesterday.

Nor Hisham said the dogs would be trained for the skills most required to assist the firefighters in their operations, especially in Sarawak.

The skills would include search and rescue on land and in waters as well as the rescue of people trapped in collapsed buildings, he said.

Nor Hisham said a K9 unit was most needed in the state because of the many cases of missing persons, not only on land but also in waters. — Bernama
