MELAKA, Oct 15 — The Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail reminded the people to always nurture and empower the spirit of unity in the multiracial and multi-religious society of the country.

According to him, the May 13 incident (race riots) in 1969 had a huge impact on the country as it ripped apart the people’s solidarity and took a long time to recover.

Speaking at the 2017 Perlis Night organised by the Perlis Kuala Lumpur Association (PPKL) here last night, he advised certain parties to refrain from being champions with acts that could slight the feelings of other races, including through religious criticisms.

Also present was the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail.

Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin also recalled his reign as the Yang di Pertuan Agong when many developed nations including Sweden and Finland praised Malaysia for the unity of its multiracial people.

He said that he is proud Malaysia is considered a model country like a ’Mini’ United Nations (UN) and the advantage of this asset should be maintained and even improved by every level of leadership right to the grassroots. — Bernama
