SHAH ALAM, July 6 ― The court order granted to the Selangor government yesterday against the Election Commission (EC) is a victory for all Malaysians, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali said today.

He said the High Court’s decision yesterday which prohibited the EC from submitting to the prime minister its report on the redrawing of electoral boundaries would ensure that constituencies in all states would remain as they were heading into the next general elections.

“The Selangor government's initiative to take care of people's rights [is] not just in the state, but for the whole country.

“Not just Selangor is going to benefit from it, but the whole country because no one will be subjected to the new redelineation in the next general elections,” Azmin said during his speech at an event today.

The PKR deputy president also stressed that for the first time in Malaysian legal history, an injunction has been granted against the EC.

“For the first time in legal history, the court had made an order to put an injunction against EC for redelineation,” Azmin added.

High Court judge Azizul Azmi Adnan yesterday said the EC cannot submit its current report as the final one until the end of an ongoing court challenge by the Selangor government.

The report is a crucial part of the EC’s entire redelineation process. After such a report is submitted to the prime minister, it will then be tabled in Parliament for approval and then passed to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong before changes such as the redrawing of electoral boundaries are officially done.

The court order is part of Selangor’s ongoing legal challenge which has now been paused, as there will be an appeal hearing on July 20 at the Court of Appeal on a related matter regarding information disclosure by the EC.
