KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 ― Two of the three Turkish men who were extradited from Malaysia earlier this month have been remanded by a court in Turkey, while another has been set free, according to media reports.
Anadolu Agency reported that Turgay Karaman, a headteacher at an international school in Ipoh, and Ismet Ozcelik were both remanded in custody by a Turkish court in its capital, Ankara.
Ihsan Aslan however was released under judicial restrictions, the report said.
The men have been charged with involvement with the Fetullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO), which the Turkish government believe orchestrated the botched coup of Turkey in July 2016 that killed 250 people.
FETO is allegedly led by United States-based Turkish cleric Fetullah Gulen.
The men were previously arrested under Malaysia’s Security Offences (Special Measures) Act, or better known as Sosma, before they were extradited to Turkey.
International organisations voiced concerns over the extradition, saying that the men faced possible torture if extradited to Turkey.
The Turkish government has requested aid from other governments to clamp down on FETO supporters around the world.
