JOHOR BARU, April 1 — The Home Ministry today urged all parties not to play up the issue over the detention of Siti Noor Aishah Atam and to leave the matter to the police.
Its deputy minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said if Siti Noor Aishah who was re-arrested under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) was found not guilty, the former Universiti Malaya student would be released.
“The police will not simply arrest anybody if he or she is not involved in activities which are inclined towards terrorism.
“In the case of Siti Noor Aishah, we will assess whether she was really involved in acts of violence,” he told reporters after opening #KitaPulai Mini Carnival Permatang Kempas, here today.
He was commenting on the re-arrest of Siti Noor Aishah, 29, under Sosma on March 27, who is now being detained at the Kajang Prison.
Siti Noor Aishah was arrested when she appeared at the Kuala Lumpur High Court following the deputy public prosecutor’s appeal against the High Court decision to acquit and discharge her last September.
In March last year, Siti Noor Aishah was arrested for the first time under Section 130JB of the Penal Code and Sosma for possession of 12 books allegedly linked to terrorism.
Nur Jazlan, who is also Pulai Member of Parliament, also criticised the Opposition who had taken this opportunity for political gain by trying to fight the case.
“There is no need for the Opposition to act as if they are defending Siti Noor Aishah when they (opposition) are not sincere about it. This is their way of trying to win the peoples’ votes,” he said.
Meanwhile, Nur Jazlan also advised Malaysians to avoid spreading terrorist content over social networks such as Facebook or WhatsApp.
“The police are constantly monitoring on every communication that is going on. The original sender will always get away with it but police will be able to nab the second or third person involved in extending the message,” he said. — Bernama
