KOTA KINABALU, March 27 — Tungku assemblyman Datuk Mohd Suhaili Said’s death will not trigger a by-election, the Election Commission (EC) said today.

Sabah EC director Datuk Md Idrus Ismail confirmed that there will not be a by-election in the state because of the proximity to the end of the state legislative assembly’s term.

“Don’t have,” he said in a short WhatsApp message to Malay Mail Online when asked to confirm whether a by-election will be called to fill the Tungku state seat.

Under the law, a by-election will not be called if the vacancy occurs within two years before the state assembly will be automatically dissolved.
