SEBERANG PRAI, March 24 ― The 19-year-old driver who allegedly drove against traffic on a highway last week pleaded not guilty to causing death and injury to others while driving under the influence of drugs.
Ng Pei Ven was earlier charged at the magistrate’s court here under Section 44 (1) (a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs to the extent of being incapable of controlling her car and causing the death of Mohamad Fandi Rosli, 26.
She allegedly committed the offence at about 7.50am on March 14.
Ng appeared calm when the charge was read out to her in Mandarin. If convicted, she will be liable for three to 10 years' imprisonment, a fine of between RM8,000 and RM20,000, and a five-year suspension of her driving licence.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Razali Che Ani applied for bail to be set at RM10,000, but Ng's lawyer, Parmjit Singh, sought for a lower sum by citing her age and disability.
Magistrate Jamaliah Abd Manap allowed bail at RM7,000 with two sureties. Ng's family posted bail later.
Jamaliah also fixed May 12 for mention of the case pending the post-mortem and chemist reports.
Last Friday, Ng was also charged with consuming illegal drugs under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The case was also fixed for mention on May 12.
