SUBANG JAYA, Feb 16 — The two dogs which survived a fire that claimed the lives of four family members in USJ2 Subang Jaya on February 6 are up for adoption.

Sugar, a four-year-old Pinscher, and Amber, an eight-year-old Labrador, are now in the care of Wong Wern Chin, 21, the neighbour of the family that perished in the blaze.

Wong told Malay Mail yesterday that Lim Yi Jun, who lost her parents and brothers in the fire, had told her she would not be able to care for the dogs.

“She will be moving to a hostel and she cannot keep the dogs. The last I heard from Yi Jun was she plans to give her dogs away to a friend,” she said.

Wong said her family could not adopt the dogs because they already had two of their own.

Property agent Lim Ah Kok, 58, housewife Goh Bee Khim, 52, and sons Yong Liang, 20, and Yong Wei, 17, were found dead on the second floor of their house. They are believed to have died from smoke inhalation.

Yi Jun, 23, was staying at UCSI University’s hostel in Taman Connaught, Cheras, during the fire broke out. She is a final-year undergraduate student of the university.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a short circuit.

Sugar was found in the living room by fire fighters soon after they brought the fire under control.

Amber was found some four hours later by Wong stucked behind the grille in the rear of the house.

Both dogs had suffered burns and smoke inhalation.

Wong said Sugar had improved after a visit to the veterinarian last week, while Amber was still recovering from burns.

“It was hard for the dogs when they first arrived at our home as they were traumatised," she said.

“After constant care, the dogs are warming up to us and are finally eating again ... which is good because it really worried us when they refused their meals.”

She said her dogs were getting along well with Sugar and Amber.

“I think having ‘friends’ for Sugar and Amber also helped them to get healthy and cheerful again. We are lucky that all of them get along well,” she said.
