KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 26 — City dwellers took the opportunity of today’s public holiday to buy school supplies for their children in preparing for the new school session which will begin next week.

Bernama observed that several shopping centres in the city were packed with parents who brought along their children to buy the required school items and most of them chose to shop at shopping centres that offer huge discounts.

Nur Hidayu Mamat, 34, said she returned to the city from her hometown a day earlier just to shop for her two children’s school needs.

“Normally, I will spend one day to buy school bags, uniforms and stationery for my children aged 9 and 10 years.

“Each year, I allocate about RM1,000 for my children’s school necessities and the prices are reasonable due to the various current promotions,” she said.

M. Ambalagan, 45, a medical officer from Klang, said he had to make early preparations for his youngest child who would enrol in Form One in the coming new school session.

“I prefer to shop in the capital city because besides the reasonable prices offered, the school supplies here are also of better quality and more durable.

Nurse Khairul Bariyah Jamaluddin, 29, said she took the opportunity of the ‘Back to School’ sales held at several shopping centres, here, to buy picture books for her three-year-old son.

“In conjunction with the ‘Back to School’ sales, many books and stationery are being sold at a cheaper price, so I took the opportunity to buy books for my son as he loves to read,” she said.

A retail clothing store spokesperson, S. Saraswadhi, 56, said each year the store would hold a year-end sale campaign which offered lower prices from that charged on normal days.

She said the up to 30 per cent discounts offered from Dec 15 to 31 were able to attract more consumers, especially during weekends and public holidays.

“Throughout the sales period, we also offer a voucher of RM30 to those who spend RM100 and above,” she said. — Bernama
