KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 25 — Many headed to malls for last-minute Christmas bargains yesterday. Some malls in the city were quiet but there were others that were packed to the brim, Mid Valley Megamall being one of them.
Retired logistic manager Shirley Ch’ng, 60, said she bought a handbag for herself this Christmas. The Penang native said she usually travels to Kuala Lumpur at year-end and for Chinese New Year.
“I was fortunate to have found a parking space within 30 minutes. I’ve been here before but today it was more than just packed. There are just too many people at Mid Valley Megamall shopping for Christmas bargains,” she said.
Vocational student Michael Thangaraj, 19, bought a gift at a toy shop for his four-year-old niece. Living in USJ8, Subang Jaya, he took public transport to the mall.
“I wanted to ride but after finding out that the mall was packed, I took the train instead. It was more convenient.
“I promised my niece I would get her something and a promise is a promise,” he said.
Futsal court manager Raymond Saging, 27, bought a handbag for his girlfriend.
“I was supposed to buy shoes for her but they were too expensive. I settled for a handbag instead.”
“I usually head back to Limbang (Sarawak) and spend Christmas with my family. But I’ll be in Kuala Lumpur this time around. At least I’ll be spending the day with my girlfriend,” he said.
Assistant sales director, Idris Abdul Rahman, 48, said he was surprised to see the large number of shoppers at the mall.
“It’s crowded. I was at Ampang Park on Friday and there were not many people there.
“It’s interesting to see how many remain dedicated to buying gifts and household items during the festive season despite the rising cost of living,” he said. Shoppers swamp Mid Valley Megamall’s Centre Court to meet Santa Claus yesterday.
