KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 ― A local firm’s design for maternity pants that shields a Muslim mother’s aurat during childbirth has won the grand prize at the International Exposition on Shariah Compliant Idea, Invention, Innovation and Design (ISCIIID 2016).

According to a Sinar Harian report, Mamapride won over the jury for the categories on design and innovation at the event that was held in Shah Alam earlier this week.

The firm received a gold medal and certificate that were presented by Deputy Selangor Mufti Dr Anhar Opir.

Malay Mail Online first reported on the MamaPride maternity pants last year.

The trousers, which cover a woman’s waist, thighs, knees and legs all the way to the ankle, has a hatch-like opening at the pelvic area that can be unfastened to provide doctors the necessary access during labour.

The maternity trousers, which resemble track bottoms with an opening in the front for childbirth, however, triggered a stir in 2015 with some groups saying that the manufacturer was “cashing in on politicised Islam in Malaysia”.

A women's rights activist in Afghanistan was also reported as labelling the trousers as being ridiculous.

Despite the apparent controversy, Mamapride told Malay Mail Online that response was encouraging.
