KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 — An Islamic healing centre in Malacca ceased operations yesterday amid an investigation over a bill of RM32,800 for various treatments.

Malay daily Kosmo! reported the management of the centre in Jasin as saying in a blog post that the bill was merely an invoice, not a receipt for actual payments made.

“The company directors have decided to shut down the centre immediately to placate Malaysians who were offended,” the management was quoted saying in a statement.

Kosmo! reported yesterday a raid against the centre by the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) and Malacca religious authorities.

However, both KPDNKK and the Malacca Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) reportedly found no wrongdoing. But JAIM said the medical charges should not be too high as medical treatments generally do not have fixed prices.

The RM32,800 bill included charges of RM2,600 for “exorcising” a doll, RM10,000 to cure “swollen kidneys”, RM10,000 for “treating nerve problems”, RM4,300 for correcting a “misaligned womb”, RM5,000 for diabetes, and RM900 for an “Islamic bath”.

The bill went viral on social media this week due to a complaint by the son of a patient.

The receipt showed that the patient had paid RM5,100 in total, with RM300 in cash and RM4,800 raised from pawning her gold bracelet.
