KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been appointed as Barisan Nasional deputy chairman with immediate effect.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is also BN chairman, said his appointment was within BN’s constitution and was proposed by MCA and seconded by MIC.

“This meeting decided to appoint Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as the new BN deputy chairman. The proposal was made by MCA and seconded MIC, and was accepted unanimously (by the BN component parties),” he told reporters after chairing the BN Supreme Council meeting here today.

On August 3 last year, Ahmad Zahid received his letter of appointment as Deputy Prime Minister, replacing Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in a Cabinet reshuffle which was announced by Najib earlier on July 28.
