GEORGE TOWN, Sept 20 ― DAP's Jeff Ooi has been released on police bail, following his arrest upon surrendering over a tweet on the late PAS spiritual advisor Datuk Haron Din that was deemed offensive to Islam.

The Jelutong MP was questioned for four hours by police officers from Kuala Lumpur and Johor following his arrest at 2.40 pm, and was released at 6.30pm

Ooi's lawyer, RSN Rayer, said the police are investigating him under Section 298 (A) of the Penal Code for causing disharmony, disunity or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill will.

"They are also investigating this under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act," he told reporters outside the police headquarters.

"The case is being handled by the investigation team from Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

"We have also received several police reports regarding this case and have referred these reports to Dang Wangi," he told reporters.

The case was over Ooi's alleged tweet last Friday that read “Adios Harun Din. Let there be peace”.

The tweet is believed to have since been removed and Ooi's Twitter account has been made private.

Haron died last Friday at the age of 76 at the Stanford University Hospital in California while undergoing treatment for a heart problem.
