GEORGE TOWN, Aug 18 ― The Penang state government said today it will give RM25,000 to shuttler Goh Liu Ying from Malacca after it gave RM100,000 to her Penang-born partner Chan Peng Soon for their Olympic silver medal.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng congratulated the badminton mixed doubles pair for creating history by clinching the second silver medal for the country and also for being the first Malaysian mixed doubles pair to reach the Olympic finals.
“Yesterday, I announced an incentive of RM100,000 to Chan for this achievement and Malacca has announced that it will be giving RM25,000 each to both Goh and Chan.
“We thank Malacca for giving the incentive to Chan too and we will respond by giving RM25,000 to Goh,” he said at a press conference during the state investiture ceremony here.
He hoped the cash incentives from Penang and Malacca for the duo will motivate them to continue working hard to achieve good results for the nation.
The duo met Indonesia's Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir in the finals last night, but lost 14-21 and 12-21 in a 45-minute match at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
They had earlier defeated 2012 Olympic Games silver medallists China's Xu Chen and Ma Jin by 21-12 and 21-19 in the semi-final match to clinch the silver.
