KUALA LUMPUR, July 4— Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has accused Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) of being “morally bankrupt” for lying about his participation in a forum held yesterday.

“This programme was an evil plot that was clearly planned by parties that are morally bankrupt,” Muhyiddin said in a statement, referring to the “Nothing to hide 2.0” event which was held at the Kelab Darul Ehsan in Ampang.

Muhyiddin said he “strongly condemned” the actions of the organisers for telling the attendees of the event that he would be attending even though his press officers had issued a statement denying JMM’s claims.

“JMM president Azwandin Hamzah was clearly lying when he said I had agreed to attend the event during a secret meeting with him,” he said.

“This is a big lie that is aimed to confuse the public and damage my reputation,” he added.

As JMM continued to proceed with the programme despite denials from Muhyiddin’s camp before the programme, his office also personally attempted to called Azwandin to clarify matters but the calls went unanswered, Muhyiddin added.

He said JMM’s actions showed them trying to portray him as a coward and someone who is untrustworthy.

“I am sad and disappointed that Malay NGOs would lie and slander during the tail end of the month of Ramadan,” he said.

“May Allah guide them all,” he added.

Yesterday, attendees at the event, which was supposed to be a platform for the former deputy to speak on current issues, staged a walkout after it became apparent that Muhyiddin would not be attending the programme.

Azwandin claimed that Muhyiddin agreed to attend the event during a secret meeting the two of them had last month, before the event was used as a platform to attack Muhyiddin instead for not showing up.

Muhyiddin along with former Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir were both sacked from Umno last month following their criticisms of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) controversy.
