KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 ― Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today urged youths to turn to e-commerce to earn money, saying the industry has the potential of turning local entrepreneurs into “global champions”.

The prime minister cited the example of a “Kuih Lapis” seller he chanced upon in Kuching, Sarawak, recalling that the woman used her profits from selling her cakes online to pay for her holidays abroad.

“An interesting anecdote, during the Sarawak election I went to a kuih lapis shop in Kuching, and on the wall, she posted pictures of her holidays in California, (and) southern France.

“She was able to do it by selling kuih lapis, and doing e-commerce online business. It's huge. And imagine, (just from) selling kuih lapis, you can be that rich,” he told a question-and-answer session at Wild Digital Conference today.

Najib went on to encourage youths to try their hand at similar online businesses, telling them that in e-commerce, “the sky’s the limit”.

“More young people should get into the e-commerce industry due to its high profitability. I think these people have great potential because of the ecosystem.

“I think the sky’s the limit. I'm excited about it. I want to push the young people into e-commerce and I really want them to really succeed. And I want them to be global champions,” he said.
