MIRI, June 6 — Miri police have detained a 21-year-old woman following her allegations that police accepted bribes to cover up criminal activities in the city.
Miri deputy police chief Supt Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the woman who is a housewife and local resident was arrested after her remarks were uploaded on the Miri Complaint Community Facebook page yesterday.
“We arrested the woman at 11pm last night and will apply for a remand order this afternoon,” he told Bernama today.
Stanley said the woman who lives in Permyjaya new township was being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
“Police have also seized a mobile phone, a Lenovo tablet, a Hotlink SIM card and memory card,” he said.
The woman had posted on the Miri Complaint Community Facebook page that police were accepting bribes to protect on-line gambling and cover up extortion of money from foreign workers in Miri.
She also claimed that police received bribes from traffic offenders who wanted to avoid legal action against them.
In addition the woman also challenged the police to take action against her while claiming that she had information on police who were on the take.
The woman’s action had attracted over 200 comments on the Facebook page with some criticising her and others recommending that a report be lodged with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) if there was concrete evidence. — Bernama
