BALIK PULAU, May 24 — The Education Ministry has allocated land in Pondok Upeh and Titi Teras for the relocation of SK and SMK St George (M), here.

State Education director Shaari Othman said the schools were located on land owned by a church which had asked for its land back by 2018.

“The Education Ministry has found suitable sites to relocate the schools less than five kilometres away from their current location. SK St George (M) will be relocated to Pondok Upeh while SMK St George (M) will be relocated to Titi Teras,” he told reporters after the Northwest District Teacher’s Day celebration, here, today.

The schools which have approximately 400 students are still operating as usual but many parents are worried that the replacement schools would not be to be completed on time.

Balik Pulau Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya who is also an alumni of the schools, has assured that there is nothing to worry about as the ministry has promised that the schools would be ready in time.

“We still have time and I believe everything will be solved accordingly,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Hilmi who is also Deputy Health Minister, urged the people to be more careful as the rainy season has come and that dengue is expected to be on the rise.

“A dry Aedes egg has a live span of six months and when it receives water again during the duration, it can become a mosquito that spreads dengue,” he said.

He advised the people to spend at least 10 minutes per week to clean their own compound to prevent Aedes mosquitoes from breeding.

Due to the El Nino phenomenon, causing a dry and hot weather, the number of dengue cases has dropped from 3,500 per week early this year to 1,240 cases last week. — Bernama
