PETALING JAYA, April 26 — Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali is being investigated under the Sedition Act over billboards across the state that had described PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as a “political prisoner”.

Police recorded Azmin’s statement for close to 90 minutes at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters today over the #BebasAnwar billboards, which have been taken down by the police.

“I regret and am disappointed by this investigation. The police could not even clarify why this is an offence. When my lawyers repeatedly asked them, they only said that they are investigating them based on orders from above,” Azmin said after having his statement recorded.

Azmin was accompanied by lawyers N. Surendran, Latheefa Koya and Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.

Police took down the billboards last month when Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar deemed the contents, which included a description on Anwar as a “political prisoner”, to be seditious.

This was after Umno Sungai Besar division chief Datuk Jamal Md Yunos threatened to burn down one of the billboards in Ampang, before deciding against his plan due to heavy police presence.

Anwar is currently serving a five-year prison sentence for sodomy.

Azmin today said he will not be cowed by the investigation.
