KUCHING, April 22 — DAP rookie candidate Abdul Aziz Isa Marindo is not the great-grandson of Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakub as reported, although he is part of the extended family of the late Sarawak governor.

Abdul Aziz is actually the great-grandson of Abdul Rahman’s sister, who is now deceased, according to the grandniece of the former statesman.

“Aziz is my nephew from the late sister of the late Tun Abdul Rahman. I would like to clarify that as we do not want to have any confusion on the fact of his family background.

“No matter what, he is still a member of the extended family,” she said, while insisted anonymity.

The 26-year-old Aziz named for the new Stakan seat in Kota Samarahan is widely touted from Rahman Yaakub’s lineage. He is a special assistant to Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen.

Aziz will be taking on his granduncle, Datuk Seri Ali Mahmud of Barisan Nasional, who is also the brother of current governor, Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud. — Bernama
