KUALA LUMPUR, March 27 ― Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar must display professionalism by admitting his mistake in the police shooting of Aminulrasyid Amzah, DAP’s Lim Guan Eng said today.

The DAP secretary-general denounced Khalid’s statement that the police have always upheld high standards of professionalism, pointing to the assault case involving jailed PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and then IGP Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Mohd Noor.

“As a fresh start to demonstrate police professionalism, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar should reverse his position that he does not owe an apology to the family of a schoolboy shot dead six years ago, despite a recent court ruling that found the Inspector-General of Police guilty of public misfeasance,” Lim said in a statement.

“Even though a public apology will not bring back Aminulrasyid, the IGP will help to bring some sort of closure to the grief suffered by the family over these last 6 years,” added Lim, who is also Penang chief minister.

In a ruling Thursday on the civil suit by Aminulrasyid’s family against the police and government, the Shah Alam High Court found Khalid, then Selangor police chief when the 14-year-old was shot dead by police in 2010, guilty of misfeasance in public office.

Khalid was ordered to pay RM100,000 in damages, with the court saying there was no proof to substantiate his claim that the police had acted after discovering a machete in the car Aminulrasyid was driving. Aminulrasyid’s family won an overall award of RM414,800 in compensation and damages in their lawsuit.
