KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak expressed today Malaysia’s solidarity with the people of Belgium in the wake of twin blasts at its Brussels airport and on the metro train that have killed over 30 and left dozens more hurt.
“I am shocked and appalled by the attacks in Brussels, which follow the recent attacks in Turkey
“These cowardly attacks are a reminder of the need for countries to unite and counter threats posed by extremism.
“The thoughts and prayers of all Malaysians are with the victims and their families,” he wrote on his Twitter account.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also weighed in and said he supports any action to find the yet-unknown perpetrators of the explosions, including the masterminds.
“Although the mastermind behind this incident has not been identified, let us remember that similar incidences that have happened in Paris, Jakarta, Turkey and other areas are known to be orchestrated by terrorists,” he was quoted saying by news portal The Star Online.
A series of explosions ripped through the Belgian capital earlier today at the Zaventem airport and Maelbeek metro station.
According to news reports from Belgium and other European cities, 20 people died in the metro blast while 14 were killed in the airport, perpetrated by a suicide bomber.
Some 130 people were reported injured in the two blasts, however the numbers have been rising as time passes.
Wisma Putra issued a statement this evening giving an assurance that no Malaysian was involved in the Brussels attacks.
Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry added that it will monitor the situation as Brussels goes into lockdown mode.
