KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 ― Registered runners of last year’s cancelled 2015 Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur (SCKL) marathon will be given priority and an “automatic” 25 per cent discount if they join this year’s race, its organisers announced today.

The SCKL 2016 is scheduled to take place on August 7 and will feature the full marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km, 3km and 1km categories.

“The #SCKLM2016 registration process will be a little different this year. Priority will be given to SCKLM2015 registered participants.

“2015 returning participants will receive an automatic 25 per cent discount when you register for 2016,” the race organisers said in its official Facebook post this morning.

Registration will only be open to the general public on April 19.

But those registered for the full marathon last year will get first dibs this year with a March 15 registration date.

Those who took part last year as half-marathon participants will subsequently be able to register on March 22, followed by 10km participants on March 29.

In the first hour since the Facebook post was uploaded, it had already been shared 712 times and liked 826 times.

First started in 2009, the SCKL marathon covers a distance of 42km starting from historic Dataran Merdeka in the city, with registered participants now numbering over 30,000 and is one of Malaysia’s biggest running events.

Last year’s race was cancelled at the 11th hour due to unhealthy air quality caused by widespread forest fires in Indonesia, which shrouded much of Southeast Asia in haze for several weeks last year.

The morning of SCKL 2015’s race day, unhealthy to moderate readings were observed nationwide except in areas in Sabah and Sarawak.

Participants, however, were allowed to collect their “finisher entitlements” on the day of the race or from the organisers which included a tote bag and either a finisher medal or certificate.
