KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 — People living in the coastal areas of Perlis, Kedah and Penang have been warned to stay away from the beaches early today following the strong earthquake in southwest Sumatra last night.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Madius Tangau said the warning was issued as a preventive measure and until the next notice from the ministry through the mass media, the Meteorological Department website, Facebook or Met Malaysia at 1-300-22-1638.

So far there had been no reports of damage to property in Selangor and Johor where tremors were felt following the 7.9-magnitude earthquake which struck southwest Sumatra at 8.49pm yesterday, he said in a statement. 

The epicentre of the quake was 649km southwest of Siberut, Indonesia, which is 1,163km southwest of Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan. —Bernama
