KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — No website including news portals will be exempted from being blocked by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) if they promote, spread information and encourage the public to participate in the Bersih 4 rally, said Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia Datuk Jailani Johari.
He said the decision by the MCMC was made as the rally did not get a permit from the authorities.
“So, if any website try to post anything to attract internet surfers into attending the rally, the MCMC will not hesitate to shut it down and the PDRM will also not hesitate to take action,” he told the media outside the KL Converge 2015 annual conference and exhibition at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, here today.
Jailani was commenting on a statement by the MCMC today that, following a media statement by the Home Ministry, it had made a decision to stop any websites from promoting, spreading information and encouraging the public to take part in the Bersih 4 rally which could disrupt national stability.
He said the decision was made by the MCMC following a discussion with the Attorney-General’s Chambers and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). As such, he said, the public are advised to not be influenced by any website which asked them to join the rally.
The MCMC in a statement also reminded the public to be extra careful when sharing information on websites and social media, especially with content which contravened Malaysian law. — Bernama
